Living in Uganda
Key insights on migration trends, cost of living, visas, economy, and quality of life in Uganda
Work & finance
English carries you here without much friction, so the barrier in Uganda isn't language but the work itself. Building a career without local roots takes patience, and that is the harder part of arriving. Pay sits near the bottom of the global scale, though so does the cost of an ordinary life, and tax leaves most of what you earn alone. What's left at the end of the month is thin, enough to live on but not much to build with, and the clearest openings for an outsider tend to be in teaching and healthcare.
Migration trends
The speed of change stands out in Uganda: its foreign-born population has surged 150% over the past decade to about 2M, one of the world's 35 largest. The arrivals come overwhelmingly from troubled neighbors — South Sudan accounts for 923.7K and DR Congo for 637.2K — reflecting Uganda's role as a major refugee host. That inflow makes it a clear net receiver, with a diaspora less than a third the size.
