Living in Tajikistan

Tajikistan offers some of the most affordable living anywhere, and with pay toward the lower end and tax claiming almost none of it, the modest sum left at month's end goes further than a bare salary would imply. The economy is small and leans heavily on money sent home from abroad, which shapes the kind of work to be found. For an outsider the way in is steep, with hiring that rarely looks beyond local circles and little room for English at work. This is a country you settle into through the language, not around it.

Tajikistan is a country of emigration: about 514.5K Tajiks live abroad, against 276.5K foreign-born residents at home. The diaspora is heavily concentrated in Russia, which hosts 415.7K, far ahead of Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Unusually, the number living abroad has slipped 4% over the past decade — a rare contraction.
