Living in Taiwan
Key insights on migration trends, cost of living, visas, economy, and quality of life in Taiwan
Work & finance
Taiwan is a technology economy at its core, built on chips and engineering, and that's where an outsider's best chance lies. The work is technical, and so is the slice of it where English alone is enough to function. Pay lands on the upper side and tax takes little of it, but hiring is hard from the outside, and without local roots or the language the door doesn't open easily even for skilled people. It rewards a specialist who fits its industries more than a generalist looking around.
Migration trends
Migration is a defining feature of Taiwan's society, which hosts about 1.1M foreign-born residents. Arrivals come overwhelmingly from across Asia — Indonesia (292.8K), Vietnam, and China lead — and that foreign-born count has grown 32% over the past decade. Taiwan's own diaspora of 832.5K, concentrated in the United States, is smaller, leaving the island a net receiver.
