Living in Macao

Macao runs on a single engine, hospitality and tourism, and the work, the pay, and the way in all flow from it. The pay sits on the higher side and tax barely touches it, yet the cost of living is steep enough that little is left once the month is paid for. English helps in the guest-facing trades and fades elsewhere. It's a narrow economy that rewards people who fit its one industry.

Migration defines Macao: 55% of its population is foreign-born. The overwhelming majority of its 377.7K immigrants come from mainland China (318K), with the Philippines and Hong Kong far behind, and the total grew 14% over the past decade.
