Living in France
Key insights on migration trends, cost of living, visas, economy, and quality of life in France
Work & finance
France is among the rare places where strong pay genuinely outpaces the cost of living, so once a normal life is covered there's real room to get ahead and save. The catch sits on the other side of the picture, where getting a foot in the door is hard for an outsider, and without solid French and a local network many doors stay shut. Where an opening does appear it tends to be in IT, care work, or science and research. It's a country that rewards those who get in, and tests the patience of those still trying.
Migration trends
France is among the world's largest immigrant destinations, home to about 8.3M foreign-born residents, roughly 12% of the population. The community has grown 13% over the past decade and is shaped by deep historical ties to North Africa: Algeria (1.4M) and Morocco (1.1M) are the two largest origins, ahead of Portugal. France's own diaspora of 2.5M is comparatively modest.
