Canada is one of the world's foremost immigrant societies. About 8.8M residents — 21% of the population — were born abroad, the 4th-largest immigrant population on earth. The leading origins now sit in Asia, headed by 1M from India, with the Philippines and China close behind. The foreign-born population has grown 11% over the decade, and against a diaspora of about 1.3 million, mostly in the United States, Canada is overwhelmingly a destination.
