Living in Cambodia

Cambodia is the rare place in the region where the door is not shut to a newcomer. Pay lands toward the lower end and so does the cost of living, and with tax taking almost nothing, the modest margin that remains holds up better than the low pay would suggest. Hiring here is more open than in most of its neighbors, reachable for someone arriving without a local network, though English will carry you only into certain kinds of work. It is a country that asks less of you to get started, even if it offers less to bank.

Cambodia is far more a country of emigration than immigration, with 778.8K people living abroad against a small foreign-born population at home. The diaspora grew 16% over the past decade and concentrates heavily in neighboring Thailand (375.6K), followed by the United States and France.
