Living in Azerbaijan
Key insights on migration trends, cost of living, visas, economy, and quality of life in Azerbaijan
Work & finance
Azerbaijan's working life is shaped by oil and the building that follows it, and energy and construction are where outside hires most often find a footing. Earnings run on the lower side, and although tax is light enough that most of the pay stays with you, the cost of living absorbs nearly all of it. Getting hired cold is difficult, and English reaches only so far beyond a few core fields. It is an economy with a clear center of gravity, steadier for those whose work aligns with it and quieter for everyone else.
Migration trends
Azerbaijan's diaspora is quietly contracting. The roughly 810.1K Azerbaijanis living abroad represent a 6% decline over the past decade, against the grain of most countries' growing diasporas. The largest community by far is in Russia, home to 308.2K, followed by Armenia and Türkiye. Even with that shrinkage, the country remains a net sender, with only about 180,000 foreign-born residents at home.
